Connor Bear

I ordered this little bear hat for Connor on Etsy.  I could spend ALL day on Etsy!

Terence wants to dress him in all boy clothing, but I like all the little cutsie stuff like this, might as well do it while I can!
I think it will look really cute in some newborn pictures
I also need to break down and finally buy a breast pump.  I have been waiting until the last minute to get one because I am nervous about spending $300 on a pump and then for some unknown reason not being able to pump.  I am planning on pumping though…so I guess I just need to take the plunge and do it.  These things are SO expensive though! Geesh!

  1. Wow! $300 bucks for that thing?!!? Holy crap! I can see why you wanted to wait to buy one! I love love love that baby hat, it is adorable!

  2. I have that pump. I loved it! But, since I was on so many medicines during my pg I didn’t ever get enough milk & had to stop nursig/pumping.
I’m not sure about your hospital, but where I had Kaidence you coul rent some from the hospital. I was a little iffy at first, but once I talked to the nurses the explained how it’s safe & all that stuff.
Just a suggestion to possibly save you some money!

  3. Yeah, I would rent one before I bought it just to make sure everything works out. I know down here they are like 18 dollars a month. Just a thought. Love the hat! So cute =)

  4. WOAH!

    WAIT!

    HALT!!

DON’T BUY THAT PUMP YET!! NO!

I had EVERY INTENTION of breast feeding. I knew it would be like a scene in a movie. Hand me the baby, put her to my breast, music plays, she eats, life is good.

It did not work that way for me and it doesn’t for a lot of people. (NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF!!)

SO!! My word of very unsolicited advice is this: RENT ONE FROM THE HOSPITAL FOR THE FIRST MONTH. It was $50 and by the end of the month I knew it wasn’t going to work for us. If it had been going well I would have invested in the one you are wanting – but since it didn’t work for us I was able to spend that $300 on something else!

So there’s Leigh’s “moment of panic for Becky” today.

  5. I would suggest renting one from the hospital for a week or two before you buy one. You can talk to the lactation consultant and they will be happy to rent you one. It is a big investment and I would hate it if you were unhappy with your purchase.

  6. I’m just going to repeat what everyone else has said. I thought for sure I would breastfeed, no problem. Things didn’t work out quite like I planned. I ended up stopping around 2 1/2 months because I just couldn’t keep up with what my baby needed (tried all the things that are supposed to help as well). The lactation consultant at the hospital gave me the sanitary (sanitation?) kit and I rented a pump from Walgreens (Ameda Pump In Style). I would definitely look into that first.

  7. The bear hat is adorable! I agree in dressing him somehwat cutsie whiel you still can- it’s precious!

That is by the best pump other than hospital grade ones. You will be fine in breastfeeding. There are usually very few reasons you cannot breastfeed other than lack of support (and the medical field is even very guilty of not being supportive always)and a few medical reasons. It’s not always easy, but you can do it if you stay strong. Pumping does make it harder, but well worth it. If you haven’t, you MUST buy the La Leche League’s Handbook- The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. It will be the best investment you make if you plan to nurse. Breastfeeding is such an amazing thing to do and the bond you create between mother and child is like no other. You will love it. Good luck!

  8. OR you may be unable to breastfeed because you can’t keep up with your babies demand, or you’re emotionally and physically exhausted, or the baby doesn’t respond well to your milk.

There are many reasons many women are unable to breastfeed. It’s not for a lack of support or a lack of trying. It’s an incredibly difficult thing to do and there is no reason for anyone to feel any guilt over not being able to do it.

And PLEASE don’t think that I would ever insinuate that you wouldn’t be able to breastfeed. I hope with all of my heart that your experience with it is smoother and easier than mine. I would have loved to have nursed Audrey longer.

I still stick with giving it a good honest try before shelling out $300 for something you may or may not be using for more than a couple of weeks.

  9. I love the hat, it’s precious!! I have that same kind of breastpump, but I got the one not as big as that one… it worked wonderful and I used it with both boys. It is awesome! Medela is a great choice, but I like the idea of renting from the hospital, then if it works well for you, go get a nicer one??? That’s a option!

  10. I love love LOVE that cute little hat!!!

Everyone else has already said it…but I was going to say my sister in law just rented a pump from the hospital for awhile, might be worth it to see how everything goes…but wow, $300?! That is insane….in the long run I guess it is cheaper then formula though!

  11. That is seriously the cutest hat ever. It makes my heart ache just looking at it! Ohhh Etsy!

Geez – why are breast pumps so expensive?!

I’m so excited you’re getting so close!

  12. so when my mom had my brother she was able to get a Medela pump and insurance paid for it. is it possible that that might be an option? $300 for anything these days is a whole lot to spend especially if like others have commented it doesn’t work as well as you’ve planned. anywho, just a thought. i figure if you pay all those premiums for insurance it might as well do something nice back for you!

  13. I am lucky to have been given a breast pump, but honestly I would have shelled out the money if I had to.

$300 is a TON upfront, but SOOOO much cheaper than formula over time!

AND- the lactation consultant I met with (at a class we took) said that having a pump around can help increase your supply if it is low.

  14. Hat is adorable and yes, Connor will be too cute with that hat on in some newborn photos! I definitely recommend a good pump! I use mine all of the time first for baby number one and now with baby #2. It might be a good idea to rent one to start. I didn’t and I did have a rough time nursing with my first to start. We hung in there and got through it and it worked out great! I nursed for a year. Now baby number 2 is 8 months and I am starting to wean him now. But, I used the pump with both kids and if you plan to pump, you need a good one! Yes they are expensive, but when you consider the cost of formula, it is not so bad! Good luck to you!!!

  15. Becky, I really would take into condsideration what all of these people are saying. It is VERY hard to keep up with the baby’s demand & if you plan on going back to work, I would just do formula only at that point. I talked to the pediatrician today about me stopping the pumping. It is very hard on your nipples, I am physically & emotionally exhausted at trying to keep up. I’m only able to give Jarrett 2 bottles of breast milk a day after making so much effort. If you would like, maybe I can take the breast pump that Kristin gave me home & you can use it for the first month too until you go back to work? I just think you will be a lot like me b/c we are so much alike anyways! I’m telling you it is hard. The pediatrician told me there is NOTHING wrong with giving formula. And, honestly Jarrett seems to like it better sometimes. Don’t feel bad if you can’t breastfeed for as long as you WANT to. I agree with everything Leigh said – right on. If I were you, I wouldn’t spend all that money on one quite yet. Spend the money on something else. I hope this helps! I love you!

PS – also, you take medicine too & just think about how that might effect your milk or to produce it.

  16. I also LOVE etsy, and its so addicting.
You might want to ask about renting a pump, sometimes its a cheaper way to go until you make sure, you can pump.
I bought the same one with my girls early on. Before I went into labor. And I never ended up using it because I went into preterm labor and then just used the one at the hospital.

  17. I Love the little hat and most all baby things on Etsy as well. You know that all handmade things for children on Etsy and elsewhere are in danger of becoming extinct? New laws from CPSIA will make it illegal for these handmade children’s products to be sold. Hope everyone visits this site and takes action… http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org/

    getting off my box now.

  18. I nursed Kaeden and the pump was the most beneficial tool ever invented!! I was fortunate enough to have a friend who let me borrow her pump – I just had to buy the sterile equipment to go with it. Maybe rent for the first month – but if it looks like something you will be using – then buy (if you can’t find someone who will loan you theirs!). My advice: have it on hand as soon as you get home! 🙂 Engourgement is a real issue – it hit the day I got home from the hospital and the baby is too small to really drink that much! The pump relieved the pressure and I am so thankful that my friend warned me and I was prepared (of course, cold cabbage leaves in the bra help too – but not as much as the pump). Best of luck!

You are about to experience something wonderful – I’m excited to follow you through it!

  19. Hi- there are other places online that are medela authorized dealers that sell the same exact pump for less than conventional baby stores.
    For example try: bestbuybaby.com
They are not allowed to list the price, so all you have to do is call and you’ll save $ that you can use towards diapers 🙂
Good luck with the breastfeeding. You do need to have faith in yourself and the support around you if you’d like to continue for a long time. After the first month it gets soooo much easier.
