School’s out for SUMMER!!! Woohoo!!! All the teachers shout for joy and the parents pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I’m really excited for summer break and I know Connor is too. He’s going to summer camp and I’m sure it will be a lot of fun! BUT…one thing I do worry about is if he’ll retain everything he learned over the past year in the next few months. He had such a good year in second grade and I can see by his work how he grew leaps and bounds.
You know what they say: “If you don’t use it you lose it”.
Last month we had the opportunity to try out Explore Horizons. We live literally less than a mile away and I’ve always driven past Explore Horizons and said to myself “Maybe I should check it out…”. I’m happy to say we finally did and I would love to share our thoughts with YOU!
First of all the staff and all the tutors are AMAZING! You get to know them over time and realize how much they love you and your kids. Everyone is super hands on and works within each child’s individual needs. Because we all know not every child is the same! Amen.
Here is a little tour of Explore Horizons:
The prize cabinet…the place every child dreams of 🙂
Computer zones
Explore Horizons is open for sessions 5 days a week. Members do not need to schedule sessions in advance, and can attend on any day, and at any time during our opening hours. Sessions are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long. Your child can go twice a week at ANY TIME! This was great for me too! I got to squeeze in a quick grocery run or errand!
Each session is normally divided into sections like 20 minutes of reading, 20 minutes of writing, 20 minutes of math, 20 minutes of science. You can also customize your sessions according to what your child needs help with. For Connor I really wanted him to focus on handwriting so he spent a while longer on that particular session.
At the end of each session Connor earned LIZARD CARDS! He was so excited about getting his cards and collecting them towards prizes. He also got to move his name up on the wall of lizards as he completed tasks. It’s always nice to have something to work towards, and this way the kids can visualize their accomplishments.
Leaping Lizards!!!
Also, at the end of each session the parents get a session card explaining what they worked on that day and what challenges they had.
With each visit Connor’s confidence grew and he really ENJOYED going to Explore Horizons…which I was honestly surprised about because when I make him sit and do homework he hates it! Lol! I think it’s the teachers and the environment that makes it so fun 🙂 They also offer open homework clinics on Wednesday evenings…so your kiddos can bring their homework with them to Explore Horizons and complete THERE! At the end of each month you’ll get a one-on-one tutoring session to tackle identified challenges regarding your child’s specific needs.
We are super excited to continue our journey at Explore Horizons and get ready for 3RD GRADE! Hold me…my baby is going to be a THIRD GRADER!!! That’s also when the dreaded STAAR test starts, so I’m so glad Explore Horizons also provides sessions to help with test taking too! Explore Horizons is for kids aged Pre-K through 8 grade.
Learning should never be feared and I’m so glad Explore Horizons helped Connor embrace his inner genius 🙂
